Despite blizzard conditions, Quiksilver ‘waves’ were breaking on New Year’s Eve—Even in Times Square Manhattan-based LED display company, D3, kicks off 2011 with debut of new LED digital display at Quiksilver store in Times Square on New Years Eve.

NEW YORK--January 3, 2011—D3 LED, LLC (D3), the world’s leader in specialized LED digital display applications, debuted its latest custom LED digital display system at the Quiksilver store in Manhattan at 3 Times Square on New Years Eve.

D3’s custom, one-of-a-kind LED digital display for Quiksilver spans 100 feet across the retail store’s entire facade at the corner of Broadway and 42nd St., and it stands 10 feet tall. Designed by TDI Signs of Long Beach, CA, the company owned by Art Rivas that selected D3 as the sign’s manufacture, the new digital display has 120 separate display surfaces on three different resolutions. It boasts one of the most complex content configurations of any LED display in the market today. The multi-surfaced display spectacular can be seen from various viewpoints facing east, west, north, and even underneath.

Despite Manhattan being shut down by a blizzard that immobilized most of the Northeastern United States shortly after Christmas, the D3 team continued to facilitate the final stages of the display’s installation. “Our team of highly skilled engineers and project managers worked around the clock for 48 hours, in near whiteout weather conditions and 50 mile per hour winds, to ensure the LED display system designed for our client, Quiksilver, debuted on New Years Eve,” said Jason Barak, managing partner, D3.   Creating the LED display system required using more than 1.3 million diodes, which if laid end-to-end would cover the length of New York’s Central Park. The 873 modules used in the display’s design would stand taller than the Statue of Liberty if stacked on top of each another. Additionally, more than 2 miles of power and data wiring were used to bring the display to life, enough to circle the Rockefeller Center Ice Rink 30 Times!   D3 once again collaborated with Space 150, based in Minneapolis, MN, who created the video and animated content for this ‘one-of-a-kind spectacular display. This is the same company D3 worked with on the now iconic Forever 21 interactive display in Times Square. “D3’s technology in unrivaled in the LED display industry,” said Billy Jurewicz, CEO of Space 150. “Their products provide content developers and advertisers maximum creative flexibility.”

While the display’s installation process was certainly made difficult by inclement weather, the Company’s resolve to complete the project on time speaks to its mission of providing clients with an unmatched level of service. The Quiksilver display marks the eighth Times Square LED display created by D3 that was installed in 2010.   D3, with its primary operations based in New York City and Rancho Cordova, CA, is responsible for designing and engineering more than 70% of all digital real estate found in New York’s Times Square since 2005 including displays for Aeropostale, Disney Store, Walgreens, ABC Studios, Forever 21, and more.
