A Drugstore’s Blazing Return to Times Square

"The official lighting of the newest Times Square “spectacular” will not occur until 8 p.m. on Thursday, but thousands of passers-by got a sneak preview Wednesday night as the three-sided LED sign wrapping 1 Times Square was put through some test paces." —New York Times

Walgreen is no stranger to Times Square, though it has been absent for several decades. It once had a store at 1 Times Square, when the building was called the Times Tower (having been constructed in 1904 for as The Times’s headquarters). Its store in the Paramount Building was known in the mid-20th century as the “poor man’s Sardi’s,” as The Times reported in 1957, “a meeting place for young men and women seeking theater careers who could afford only a malted milk and a sandwich for dinner.”
